That time of year

It's that time of year when the Hollywood studios release many major films and the film awards season commences. As you may already know, many films are first books. This film season is no exception. War Horse is based on the book of the same name. The Adventures of Tintin is based on the character from the graphic novels from Belgium. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is based on the John Le Carre novel of the same name. Meryl Streep's latest film, The Iron Lady, is based upon a biography of Margaret Thatcher, former British Prime Minister. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close is based on the book by Jonathan Safran Foer (who had an earlier novel Everything is Illuminated made into a film, too). These are just a handful of 2011 films based on written works.

You may be asking, "Mr. McCullough, what's the point?" The point is books make a great source for movies. How often have you imagined a movie in your head as you read a book? I just want to encourage the WCHS community to read these, and other, books that so many popular and critically acclaimed films are based upon.

Happy reading and see you soon in the media center.
